Alice Walker published the novel The Color Purple, in 1982. Set in Georgia, it is a series of letters written to God from the main character Celie, who is frequently abused and looking for meaning and help. She forms bonds with her sister and other colorful women who help her to take charge of her life and escape the brutality she has been living within.
